Some #AngulusBlanket spam because Instagram made a reel for me 😁 🧶 Did you know Angulus is worked one colour at a time (no fancy colourwork, tapestry or even mosaic crochet), it is reversible and there are no ends to weave in at the end. Loved designing this.

Friday evening update on my #knittingwithnishiknits #ColourYourStarsSocks : Watching (with half an eye) Sweden-Belgium Euro qualifiers. Belgium just scored. Damn. Aaanyway...

So this knitting challenge is very much that for me: a challenge. To be honest, I've never done stranded colourwork with such thin yarn/needles before. I've never actually knitted a pair of socks before! If I end up with 2 socks at the end of this adventure I'll be beyond pleased!

The heel - specifically turning the heel - was kind of a hurdle for me, Christine @nishiknits had to send me a video before I finally got it. 😅

But I did get it eventually, and now I'm working on the foot. Still about half the length of the foot to go, so I'm not at all half-way, but my plan is to finish sock 1 this weekend.

My #stormtröja (pattern: @wynja ) is done! 🧶 Against what felt like all odds I finished it and it fits! It's been 1.5 years since I cast on 😬. I ran into all kinds of issues making this. The pink yarn ran out with just 10cm still to go on the last sleeve. This was my own fault for having wildly inconsistent gauge.
First I tried to find more yarn, but couldn't find it in the right dye lot. But the fit wasn't great due to my gauge issues, there were bulges in the wrong places, the body was far too wide below the yoke. I'd also added short rows in the back below the yoke, which was unnecessary given that the whole thing was too big anyway.
So I bravely embarked on some jumper surgery... I cut off both sleeves and the body from the yoke and put all the live stitches on needles...✂️ Now my jumper was in 4 pieces. 😱 At this point, I couldn't bare to even look at the sad pieces of jumper, so it was forgotten for months...
But then for some reason I picked it up the other day... I unraveled half the body and used the yarn to finish the 2nd sleeve. I unraveled part of the yoke below the patterning, where I'd previously made some increases. I re-knitted those rounds on the yoke with correct gauge and no increases.
I sewed the sleeves back on the yoke with kitchener stitch. I knitted as many rounds as I could with the remaining yarn on the body (bottom-up), made sure the number of stitches matched the yoke...
Then I finally reattached the body to the yoke with a LOT of painstaking kitchener stitching! 😅
I'd say it was all worth it though, wouldn't you? 🙂

But this Reel is part of the #ColourYourStarsSocks KAL/test - @nishiknits asked us: How do we knit colourwork? Here's how I do it, with the dominant colour crossing over my index finger from back to front, b/g colour crosses from front to back. Look carefully and you'll see me catch floats by picking up the white from the other side. I stretch out the stitches on my right needle when there are many of the same colour in a row, to make sure the floats are long enough.

Gauge is intrinsic to any knitting or crochet project that you plan to wear (well perhaps except scarves or shawls).

Gauge is the key to garment construction, sizing and grading. Writing a crochet pattern in 9 sizes without gauge would be like trying to paint a picture with your eyes shut.

As a crocheter or knitter, I need to get the gauge stated in the pattern to unlock the creator's design and make sure I end up with something I can actually wear.

In the case of the #colouryourstarssocks gauge - and I mean getting your gauge SPOT ON - is the difference between being able to pull the sock over the widest part of your ankle/heel, or not (which would render it useless). So yeah, pretty much super important.

Having said all that, I have one garment design - the #DalhemSkirt (swipe --> ) which requires NO gauge swatching and can be made with ANY weight yarn. 😮 WUT?? Instead, in the pattern I ask you to crochet a number of stitches that fits your hips and that is divisible by a specific number... So the maths works out. (Obviously, the skirt will look a bit different if it's made in a different weight yarn though.) If you hate the gauge game, chances are you'll love Dalhem! 😉

Done with the leg/ankle bit, phew. Onwards to the heel! This took me absolutely ages. I clocked myself - c. 6 mins per round. So 53 leg rounds = 5 hrs 20mins of knitting time. 😱 On half a sock. I will never be able to actually wear these - I'll need to frame them and put them up on my wall or something, they're a ****ing work of art! 🤣😍

When the yarns arrived from @limmodesign they were much prettier than on my screen and I realised I needed to pair them differently from what I'd planned. My socks will be glittery vanilla on dark blue. 🤍💙

Today's theme in the Knitalong with @nishiknits 🌸 #knittingwithnishiknits 🌸 is all about TOOLS! What needles do you use for knitting things in the round with a small circumference, like sleeves, mittens, tops of hats, or socks as we'll be knitting in this case! ( #colouryourstarssocks )

I always found both DPNs and magic loop on circular needles a bit of a faff - with the former you have to switch needles at least 2 or 3 times per round, and there's just a lot going on with all those needles everywhere, feels messy to me! Magic loop method is easier, but you still have to pull through all those stitches to the other end of the cable, arrgghh!

Introducing CrasyTrio by Addi! Only one needle change per round, and 3 needles needed in total. Clean, clever, simple! Love this. (They're also on sale right now from @frufjellman for those of you in Sweden). I'm probably going to need some in a smaller size for this test knit, but will need to Swatch first... 🧘🏼‍♀️😌🕉️

I spent the day resting my leg, doing light rehab exercises, cuddling with the dog, and - long overdue - updating Ravelry! @hi.ravelry (Finally got some decent painkillers so I slept ok for the first night in a while last night!) Do you use Ravelry? I've been an addict since 2010!

I've entered far from everything I've ever knitted or crocheted, but still I have over 200 projects on there, so that'll have to do! 😅

I have 40+ of my own crochet designs listed as well. I'm impressed, didn't realise the number was that big!

My favourite feature of Ravelry is probably the ability to look at other people's projects based on any pattern I'm interested in making myself. I can see their yarn and colour choices, and their notes - often these will be very useful!

One feature that's missing though, is the ability to use items in my Ravelry store in Instagram shops, like you can with e.g. Etsy... Maybe soon.

Jag har ont. Behöver mer/bättre smärtlindring efter operationen i fredags. Enligt Region Jämtland där jag opererades är det min hemregion Stockholms uppgift att förskriva läkemedel. Enligt Region Stockholm är det läkaren som utförde operationen som har ansvaret för att jag får rätt smärtlindring, fram tills att ortopeden i Danderyd har träffat mig för uppföljning om 2 veckor. 1177 hävdar att min vårdcentral ska skriva ut smärtlindring, men vårdcentralen säger att de inte kan skriva ut smärtlindring efter en operation som de inte vet någonting om och hänvisar till Ortopeden Danderyd, som hänvisar till Ortopeden i Östersund, som blir arga och hänvisar mig tillbaka till Ortopeden Danderyd (som f.ö. har en 3h lång telefonkö). Det hela verkar sluta med att jag blir tvungen att sätta mig på Akuten på Danderyd imorgon och vänta på att någon där kan skriva ut recept. Hur bär man sig åt?? Dags att förstatliga sjukvården?

I have to admit I'm not very good at these more personal posts, I figure you choose to follow me here because we share an interest in yarn arts/craft, not because of who I am.

But recently, I've experienced the warmth & goodness of this community at a more personal level; I broke my leg and ended up in hospital far away from home. I made an exception to my rule to only post craft related stuff on here and I told you what had happened. Your response absolutely blew me away.❤️ Thank you.

Also, to cheer me up, as part of all of this leg malarkey, I was invited by the kind soul Christine @nishiknits to join her new pre-test knit/ KAL / virtual social club/ challenge #knittingwithnishiknits to test her coming new sock pattern #colouryourstarssocks

So, I'm Anna, a Swedish mother-of-three based in Stockholm, of the fine vintage 1979. I've loved crafts since early childhood, and started crocheting like a crazy person in 2010 when expecting my first born. I knit too, but I'm not as good at it. Crochet is my mother tongue and knitting is my 2nd language.

I've knitted a fair number of sweaters, hats and mittens before but never actually managed to finish a pair of socks, so I'm kind of nervous about this challenge! Especially as it's quite fine gauge. 😬 Wish me luck! 😁

I feel crochet has long been misunderstood and underrated as a craft, fighting to be properly recognised in the shadows of its big sister knitting. (At least in Sweden.) Through my designs, I try to show the world what crochet is capable of: wearable garments, tasteful and modern aesthetics, innovative solutions.
