Leila’s square is a little granny square I’m planning to use for a bedspread or blanket for my little girl – Leila. This is the pattern for the square. I took inspiration from another crocheted flower, the Maybelle Flower, (pattern here), but I wanted a less open, more dense, design, so here’s what I came up with…
What you’ll need
Any yarn and hook you have laying about really. I used a 3.5 mm (E) hook and Scheepjes Catona, a sport weight mercerised cotton yarn, in purple shades: 226, 520, 240, 282, 113, 521 and grey: 074
First we crochet the flower…
Round 1
In a Magic Circle, ch 2 (does not count as a stitch) and then 12 dc, close with a slst in the first dc, pull the end to close the MC. (12 dc)

Round 2
Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc into the same st, 2 dc into each dc around, close with a slst in the first dc (=the starting ch-3). (24 dc)

Round 3
Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in first st, ch 4, skip 2 sts, *sc in next st, ch 4, skip 2 sts, repeat from * until you have gone all the way round to the first sc, close with a slst in that first sc. (8 sc + 8 ch-4 spaces)

Round 4
Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in first sc, [hdc, 3 dc, hdc] all in the next ch-sp, *sc in next sc, [hdc, 3 dc, hdc] all in the next ch-sp, repeat from * until you have gone all the way round, close with a slst in the first sc. (48 sts: 8 sc in-between petals + 5 sts in each of the 8 petals)

Round 5
Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in first sc, *hdc in next st, 2 dcs in next st, tr in next st, 2 dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in sc, repeat from * until you’ve gone all the way round, close with a slst in the first sc. (64 sts: 8 sc in-between petals + 7 sts in each of the 8 petals)

Squaring off:
Round 6
This round is crocheted in the back loops only.
Join new colour with a standing sc in the tr at the top of any petal, (with the new yarn in a slipknot on your hook, just work a normal sc), sc in the next 2 sts *hdc, dc, hdc, sc in next 5 sts, repeat from * around, close with a slst in the first (standing) sc. (64 sts)

Round 7
Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts, *hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, [tr, ch 2, tr] all in the next st (=top of next petal), dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 7 sts, repeat from * around, close with a slst in the first sc. (76 sts: 8 ch + 8 tr + 16 dc + 16 hdc + 28 sc)

Round 8
Ch3 (counts as first dc), dc in next 6 sts, tr in next 2 sts, *[2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr] all into the corner ch-sp, tr in the next 2 sts, dc in the nxt 13 sts, repeat from * around, close with a slst in the first dc (the starting ch-3). (92 sts: 52 dc + 32 tr + 8 ch)

hello anna, i’m raras. your pattern is awesome!
correct me if i’m wrong, i think there is a little miss calculation at the round 8.
thanks a lot for your pattern.
How do you mean? I can’t find a mistake but maybe I’m blind (and I don’t love maths 😉
